Solving Quadratic Equations

Hello 3E4,

We have learnt the 4 different methods of solving a linear quadratic equation.
They are by
1) Factorisation
2) Quadratic formula
3) Completing the square &
4) Graphical method.

Which method would you use for solving this equation:
x ² - x - 5 = 0 ?

Explain why you chose that method.

I prefer to solve the queston by completing the square. The method is easy to understand and the method is very simple. It is suitable for someone who needs to understand the question thoroughly

Factorisation.By taking out X the equation will become X=0 OR (X-6)=0, hence, X is 6 since X cannot be 0.

I'll use the quadratic formula because I have memorised it so it's easy for me to solve the equation...
(although I need to be careful with changing signs...)

i prefer using quadratic formula as i have already memorise it and also more convenience in solving equations as i have used to it:D

Among all the formulas, solving the question by completing the square method suits me. To me, it is much easier compared to the other formulas. I am always making careless mistakes when I use the quadratic formula. Also, it is much faster than any of the other formulas.

QUADRATIC FORMULA!!!=]
it's fun anyways,despite it's tricky. I'm more comfortable with it

I does think that the QUADRATIC FORMULA is much easier for me. Because of the song i am able to remember the formula easily(:
I am able to solve the question without problems if i don't forget to change signs.

I prefer solving the question by completing the square cos it is easier.

i'll use the quadratic formula to solve the equation as i feel it's easier. mainly because i can remember the formula better than the other methods taught. (the song really helps!!! xD )

and its simple and easy

Hi all,

Thanks to the 10 of you who have responded to the question.

6 opted using the quadratic formula while 3 are more comfortable using the completing the square method.
We can't factorise the equation, Shu Hui, so factorisation is out of the question.

How about the rest of you? Anyone likes to use the graph method?

I would use completing the square method as this method is the the easiest formula for me and it cant be solved by factorisation as it is in odd numbers.Graphical method takes a long time and I aften have careless mistake when it comes to solving with quadratic formula.

muahahah... factorise is out...graph also out...then dont like to deal with fractions...so ill go with quadratic formula! haha! the song so nice

I would solve the question by using Quadratic formular as it's easy to memorise the formular and it's easier for me to solve the question.

Ahh.... I'll go for quadratic formula simply because its the method that I spent so much time remembering during the holidays till the song was played... I suppose its easier for me too.

i will choose the completing the square method as that is the one that i am most familiar with. i have problems with the rest

Quadratic formular---

it's easy

QUAADRATIICC FORMULAAA.
yess. the song has obviously stuck in my head so i'll go for the quadratic formula cos i don't have to crack my brain to get the answer.

I changed my mind!
Quadratic Formula is better than the Square method. I tried using the Square method for some of the questions, but I still can't get the answer! SO CHEERS TO QUADRATIC FORUMAAAA! :D

hehe...i would prefer to use the quadratic formula because it's so fun to use it and it is easier to solve.of course that song rocks!:)hahas...

Quadratic formular-its like peanuts

I would solve it by the quadratic formula method because it is very easy to remember. Any time i can sing the tune of the song (even whisle it!)

First I want to know if the given equation can be factored? How? I use the new Diagonal Sum Method (Amazon e-book 2010). The New method quickly indicates that this equation can not be factored. Consequently, I use the improved quadratic formula in graphic form.
x1 = -b/2a + d/2a ;
x2 = -b/2a - d/2a
with d^2 = b^2 - 4ac = 21. Answers:

x1 = 1/2 + (sqr 21)/2
x2 = 1/2 - (sqr 21)/2
Note: -b/2a is the x-cordinate of the parabola axis.
+d/2a and -d/2a represent the two distances from the axis to the x-intersects of the parabola.
This new Diagonal Sum Method will be still fast and convenient when a, b, c are large numbers.
